Red carpet fever doesn’t officially start until the Golden Globes in January, but last night’s American Music Awards hinted at what’s to come. And from what we saw, it seems that this season’s runway trends have made a major impression on well-dressed A-listers, from romanticism with an eccentric twist to barely there sheer dressing.
As far as menswear goes, Harry Styles certainly pushed the notion of gender-bending dressing in a fashion-forward direction: His suit drew on interior design motifs—also present on the runways—while the black shirt was a cool look for evening. Adding a brighter touch was Zendaya, in a Fausto Puglisi for Emanuel Ungaro dress, replete with neon pink poppies.
And yet the boldest pieces here revolved around the idea of revealing skin in chic yet eye-opening ways. It’s a trend that started to gather speed at this year’s Met Gala, with the likes of Kim Kardashian West and Beyoncé leading the pack in Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli and Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy, respectively. Last night it was Ciara who kicked that approach into high gear, wearing Reem Acra’s Swiss dot diaphanous dress. Singer Ellie Goulding tried her hand at the look, too, in an asymmetric Alexandre Vauthier couture number held together by tiny gold chains, the modern answer to Elizabeth Hurley’s famous safety-pin Versace frock.
